Filming @ hydrogen event for our docu "H2"

During our quest  in our documentary  "H2", a film about  tomorrow's transportation, we discovered that Hyundai is one of the first to put a hydrogen car on the market. To take inventory of the possibilities on driving on hydrogen at this stage, they followed up by organizing a  hydrogen event in Rotterdam. Because the H2 car was there, we drove down to Rotterdam to take it for a spin and film it for ourselves.

Car as Power plant

One of the speakers was Professor Ad van Wijk  from The Green Village/Technical University Delft. He talked about  how Hydrogen cars can become our local power plants. We are going to visit Ad van Wijk to film more about this.

Reinier van den Berg, a climate expert. He shared about the need of using different energy sources as the climate is feeling the impact of our current use of fossil fuels. He stated that in nature everything is solar powered and is created in  sustainable life cycles. He pointed out that if it's possible in nature, it's also possible in our societies.

Interview for documentary CityRooftops with Philip van Traa

Since September 2014 Pure Media is following designer and plant specialist Philip van Traa for the documentary CityRooftops. On Wednesday the 11th of March we sat down for an interview Philip van Traa. Set in one of his favorite locations, Philip van Traa shared his story and his heart. But before doing so, some preparation was necessary.

Interview set-up

Benny and I arrived early to check out the location. As we brought all the gear up, a buzzing sound was very much present on the huge open floor where the interview would be. Benny wanted this interview to be one of the high points in the documentary - so everything should be of the highest quality, including the sound. If you remove this kind of buzz in post production, voices start to sound unnatural and 'tinny' - and that's not what Benny wanted. We found the machine that was causing the buzz was the air ventilation system for the toilets. Then we asked the people at the location if we could switch it off for the interview, and that wasn't a problem. After that we set up the camera, lights and microphones, getting them ready to go and invited Philip van Traa to sit on a chair and share.

Philip van Traa shared how he got involved in this project and about his desire to simplify. Then, by applying various simple solutions to a garden rooftop in the city, seemingly small solutions could add up to a big impact on city life. 

In large cities, heat and smog are known problems. Smog comes from traffic and a lot of the traffic in the city is food related. So when food is grown on rooftops in the city, there's less food traffic and less smog. But there's also less smog because some of the plants are capable of retaining some of the emission. 

Besides food and smog, green city rooftops can help cities with water retention. When there's heavy downpour, flooding could be likely as the water management is more controlled. Coming back to the heat issue: green rooftops with some kind of water retention absorb the sun's heat better than plain rooftops. And that's how rooftop gardens, by reducing smog, retaining water and absorbing heat, can have more impact on a city's climate than one would expect at first sight.

For our new Documentaire A Chef's Heart with Chris Naylor we followed Christ  with the camera  teaching a workshop “cooking with locale vegetables” for the students of restaurant Fifteen. Most students were impressed  with Chris'  innovative way of working ,cooking and of course how the food tasted.

Interview with architect Luuk Verlint for the docu City Rooftops

On Wednesday January 21st we continued filming for our documentary City Rooftops This time we talked with architect Luuk Verlint at his drawing table. He is the architect behind the drawings of the 2000 square metre roofgarden. Having done hundreds of roofgardens with the innovative team at De Dakdokters, this particular project is one of his grandest designs so far and is unique. Besides fruit, vegetables and various herbs, B's roof has a beach, barbeque spots and two lanes for "jeu de boules" to name some key points.

Rooftops as these are what Luuk calls the "green lungs of the city". They can bring back some of the uses of land from the ground that was acquired for city buildings. More recently De Dakdokters are finding ways to use roofs for water retention to help cities manager their waterflow when there is a lot of rain.

Amongst others, Luuk Verlint shared about the fluidity of design process. It started off with post-it notes and sketches. Later more detailed drawings and visits followed hand in hand until the plan was finished.

In terms of filming, as much natural light as possible is used as a key light. A low energy fill light is added later on. Concerning sound, two microphones were used for the interview, in case one microphone fails.

Filming promotional clip for Jonathan Karpathios' new book

On Wednesday the 14th of January we filmed more material forJonathan Karpathios's
 new book Echte Eten 2 promo. In this clip we will use material from our new documentary Tomorrow's Food in France.

Over lunch Benny Vink and Jonathan Karpathios discussed the last details of what they wanted to highlight. As soon as that was done we were ready to start filming.

In between the filming Benny Vink and Jonathan Karpathios refined phrases as needed and Benny Vink sometimes asked questions to clarify.

Instead of blocking out the sun and putting up lights Puur Media chooses to use the light of the sun as much as possible.

Finally, certain parts are captured multiple times so that there are enough options to choose from when editing. Below are some pictures.
